Valves to find and label

Walk the house with a roll of tape and a marker. Label each valve and note it on a sketch of the house.

  • Main shutoff, usually where the water line enters the basement or mechanical room, near the meter in many Parker homes
  • Irrigation branch valve and its drain, often close to the main
  • Water heater cold supply valve on top of the tank
  • Each toilet's supply valve behind the bowl
  • Sink valves in each bathroom and the kitchen
  • Washer valves in the laundry box
  • Refrigerator ice maker valve, often under the sink or in the basement ceiling below the kitchen
  • Water softener bypass, if you have one
  • Hose bib shutoffs inside the house for older-style spigots

Test them, gently

  1. Start with the fixtures

Close and reopen each fixture valve. If one drips at the stem after moving it, note it for a plumber.

  2. Test the main

Close it fully, open a faucet on the top floor and confirm the flow stops. Then reopen it slowly.

  3. Fix what fails

Old gate valves sometimes won't close fully or start leaking once moved. A plumber can replace a stubborn main with a quarter-turn valve.

  4. Share the map

Show everyone in the household, and leave the sketch for house-sitters and guests.

Common questions

Can I turn off the curb stop myself?

It usually requires a special key, and many water providers prefer to do it themselves. Call your water provider if the main shutoff inside fails.

Should I install an automatic shutoff valve?

Whole-house leak detection valves can close the main when sensors detect water or unusual flow. Some insurers offer discounts for them. Ask a plumber about installation near the main.
